The presidential election is right around the corner on November 8th. The percentage of young voters is dropping every election cycle. We are the future of the country, therefore our votes are important. I have interviewed students from the republican, democrat, and independent parties in hopes to raise awareness about the student body and their thoughts and beliefs during this election.
Hillary Clinton, the Democratic nominee, believes in a fair tax system, making sure that the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes so that the lower class isn’t stuck paying more than the upper class. Hillary also believes in keeping small businesses prominent in towns and making college debt-free, which takes on the very large issue that challenge many college students—the dreaded student loan debt. Mrs. Clinton understands that we need affordable health care and an economy that works for everyone. She knows that not every American citizen is a billionaire, and she takes that into consideration when choosing which issues she represents. Hillary Clinton also wants to make having a family and working a lot easier. There are thousands of new mothers each year that need to spend time with their newborns. This prevents them from going to work. Hillary believes that couples starting families should not be penalized, but rather rewarded with paid maternity leave. This does not only apply to pregnant mothers and excited fathers. It also applies to individuals with a loved one in the hospital or family emergency that forces them to take time off work. These workers would also get paid leave. “It is hard to defend and like a candidate who is always in the headlines for something he said or did that was demeaning to a group of people.” (Abbie Childs) With Hillary Clinton in office, we won’t have to worry about inequality or unfairness, not only in the work world but also in the real world. Hillary wants to make sure that women will get paid the same amount as a man performing the same job. She will make sure that women have equal rights and opportunity, just as she will make certain of the same equal rights and opportunity for the LGBT community. Hillary believes we’re all equals and should be treated that way. A big issue in our country today is gun violence. With so much inequality and hatred, there is a never-ending rush of violence and crime in our country. Guns are easy to purchase, which makes it easier for a person to gain access. Hillary Clinton wants to pay respect to all the families who have lost a loved one due to gun violence, and wants to prevent it from happening ever again. She wants to put an end to gun violence and mass murders. If she’s elected into office, she will be more than capable of meeting this goal. “Make America Great Again” is a phrase we hear often from her opponent, Donald Trump. Hillary believes that America is already great, and we will stay great with her in office. She wants to maintain the world’s best military and defense and stay equipped with the best gear and soldiers that will do an amazing job of protecting and defending our country. She also believes in making our already great National Security plan stronger. “I support Hillary Clinton for the sole purpose that she is a more compassionate and level-headed candidate than Donald Trump.” (Tyler Marinkovic) Hillary Clinton is qualified, passionate, and ready to be our first female president. Donald Trump, the Republican nominee, believes in a stronger security system that involves stronger immigration laws and plans to fight against ISIS. As president, he promises to create a stronger cyber security system, stronger screening procedures for immigrants trying to enter or already living in our country, and stronger immigration laws to prevent terrorists from entering the the United States. Donald also wants to increase the U.S. Army to 540,000 active duty soldiers to make us an even stronger and better country. “From the way he talks about immigrants, women, and other politicians, it is clear that Donald Trump is not mature enough to be the United States president.” (Tyler Marinkovic) Although many Americans agree with this quote, Trump and his supporters believe that he can make America great again by keeping foreigners out and American citizens in. Donald Trump is very passionate about creating a stronger economy. He wants to cut taxes and end radical regulations that force jobs out of our communities. He truly believes in lowering taxes and making life more affordable for U.S citizens. Donald wants to create more jobs in America for our hard working citizens and get rid of low paid immigrants working their jobs. Trump also promises to negotiate fair trade deals that will create more jobs for Americans. “Trump has good plans and great business ethic. I’m all for him, it’s time for a change.”(Doug Olson) Trump and his supporters believe his plans will make America great again—not only with a better economy, but also with stronger security. Donald Trump is one of the biggest opponents of Obamacare. He strongly believes in repealing and replacing Obamacare with a more effective and useful system for American citizens. Donald is a big supporter of life and wants Americans to live happy and healthy with good healthcare. This is also why he is pro-life. He believes that abortion should be illegal because human life begins at conception; therefore, it should not be up to women to decide, but up to the government. Mothers carrying their children to full term as Trump wishes, will be provided with 6-weeks paid leave. This will be a great help to new mothers because the first weeks and even months of a baby’s life are the most crucial. Donald Trump and all of his supporters believe that by becoming president, he will without a doubt make America great again.
