Breast cancer is a serious disease that happens when malignant cells form in breast tissue. One in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. Although breast cancer is more common in women 2,600 men will be diagnosed with it every year and about 400 men will die. Every 2 minutes a woman will be diagnosed with breast cancer and every thirteen minutes a woman will die of breast cancer. There are over 2.8 million people who have survived breast cancer still alive today. This all proves that breast cancer is a serious problem that has affected a lot of people’s everyday life.
With these sobering statistics in mind, Whitewater high school hosted a volleyball game against McFarland to help raise awareness to the struggle. Whitewater and McFarland girls both came decked out in pink. Before the game Whitewater high school girls spoke about different breast cancer facts to the fans. This was a great way to make more people aware of this disease that people are facing. Kelci Hansen, a JV 1 volleyball player, who participated in the event shared her thoughts on the night, “I felt that there was a lot of support and that this was the biggest crowd that we have ever had, and it shows that people were showing awareness towards breast cancer.” Overall it was a great way to end her season. Katelyn Lashley was also interviewed. She has been a volleyball player for four years. When asked what it was like coming into this game she said, “I thought it was pretty nice that everyone was wearing pink that day to support it.” While McFarland won the match there were a lot of Whitewater fans there to cheer at the game. The varsity lost the first game 25 to 17. The second game they had an off game and lost 25 to 8. In the third game the varsity fought hard to the very end. Even though they lost they made the Whippets proud with a 25 to 20 score. This was not a bad way to end the regular season as they were able to bring some awareness to the Whitewater High School community.
